Tekapo Traffic Master Plan

View of Twizel market place and children's playground in the autumn.

We know that Tekapo has many passionate residents who are keen to make our town the best it can be.

Traffic is one of the things that can define a town. In a popular area like Tekapo how traffic flow and parking can significantly change the feel of the central area.

Your Community Board wants to create a vision for traffic management for the future to guide development and help with decision-making. We want to know what you'd like in that future.

We are presenting three different scenarios for the town centre, but we want to know what your preferences are for some specific areas.

  • Currently traffic does not flow well in Tekapo’s commercial area. We are planning to improve traffic flow and are intending to implement progressive improvements over the next twenty years.

To address the current issues we need to:

    • Maximise vehicle access and parking (data projections suggest we will require 300 more car parks by 2044).
    • Work out the right balance between parking, pedestrians and future needs.
    • Make sure that parking does not dominate and that public spaces are preserved.

In this survey which ask which of the three scenarios you would most like to see applied to the specific areas in Tekapo.

Join the conversation by providing your feedback by 5pm on Wednesday 7 May 2025.
